Choosing CFM

CFM² = Maximum Tonnage Rating� Therefore, take

the CFM rating of a pump and multiply it by that

number to find the maximum number of tons the

pump is rated for:

3 CFM PUMP (3 X 3) IS RATED

FOR 9 TONS.

A 7 CFM PUMP (7 X 7) IS RATED

FOR 49 TONS.

In many cases, depending on the system line sizes

of large tonnage systems, it is better to put two

or more smaller, easily maneuverable pumps at

different locations� This will overcome some of the

pressure drop problems and evacuate faster than

a single, large pump� Pumps in the 1�5 to 10 CFM

class are adequate to handle 99% of the work�

HOW TO MEASURE EVACUATION

A micron is a unit of pressure starting from a perfect vacuum (no pressure) expressed in

linear increments� One inch equals 25,400 microns� That last inch of pressure below zero on

the low side compound gauge (see illustration) is 25,400 microns�

A compound gauge only indicates that a vacuum is being produced, but does not tell you

if moisture or contaminants are still in the system� Evacuation is complete when a system

holds 500 microns to ensure dehydration is complete�

Therefore, there is a small fraction of an inch difference between a complete evacuation and

an inadequately evacuated system� A compound gauge cannot measure this pressure at

these levels accurately�

Only a micron gauge like the SUPERNOVA DV-40 or our DV-22N (refer to page 19) can

accurately read the low pressures produced when evacuation/dehydration is complete�
